Healthcare Analytics: Using Data to Improve Patient Outcomes

The healthcare industry is increasingly embracing data-driven solutions to transform patient care. I am passionate about using my technical skills to support these transformative efforts, helping healthcare professionals focus on what they do best: saving lives.

During my work with an ambulance EMS company, I aimed to optimize business processes, reduce inefficiencies, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. By analyzing employee workloads across various departments—from frontline crew members to directors—I identified opportunities to streamline workflows that enabled staff to focus on critical tasks, resulting in significant growth and a high return on investment (ROI).

Optimizing Training and Onboarding

One major initiative focused on training and onboarding processes. The EMS company offered Critical Care Transport (CCT), Advanced Life Support (ALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) services, each requiring skill assessments for new employees. The existing process for BLS skill assessments took approximately three hours per trainee, solely for the review. To address this, I developed a PowerApp with an intuitive interface and integrated Power Automate to streamline filing, notifications, and content management. This automation reduced the review time to just 15 minutes per trainee, allowing supervisors to concentrate on strategic initiatives and ensuring that employees were better prepared to deliver high-quality care.

The improved onboarding process not only enhanced efficiency but also contributed directly to the organization's ability to deploy skilled personnel faster, which is critical in emergency medical services. By significantly reducing onboarding time, the EMS company was able to fill crucial staffing needs and improve response times, ultimately impacting patient care quality.

Incident Management System for Operational Excellence

In collaboration with the Operations team, I also created an incident escalation process for unusual occurrences, including vehicle accidents, patient incidents, and equipment failures. We developed a digital launchpad accessible on company devices, allowing frontline crew members to report incidents quickly via Microsoft Forms or PowerApps. Once submitted, supervisors were notified instantly, enabling prompt investigation and escalation decisions when necessary. This process improved accountability, sped up response times, and ensured effective management of incidents—all of which are crucial for maintaining high standards in patient care.

By leveraging Power BI and Azure Data Lake, I further enhanced the incident management system by providing real-time insights and data analytics that enabled stakeholders to make informed decisions. These insights allowed for proactive risk management, optimized resource allocation, and better overall decision-making. For example, supervisors could identify recurring issues, such as equipment failures, and take preventive measures to reduce future incidents, demonstrating the system's value in long-term operational improvements.

Streamlining HR Incident Reporting

We replicated the incident management process for HR-related workplace incidents, using the same launchpad to standardize and automate reporting. This minimized administrative overhead for supervisors and improved response efficiency for both operational and HR incidents. For example, some HR incidents, such as safety hazards or harassment claims, required immediate action, while others, like minor policy violations, could be addressed during routine reviews. Standardizing these processes not only reduced delays but also ensured consistency in how incidents were handled across the organization.

This standardization also helped align HR processes with broader organizational objectives, ensuring that critical incidents received immediate attention while reducing the administrative burden associated with less urgent issues. As a result, HR staff could focus on strategic initiatives rather than being bogged down with paperwork and manual follow-ups.

Addressing Key Challenges in Healthcare Analytics

Healthcare organizations face significant challenges, including data privacy concerns, system integration complexities, and effective implementation planning. Data privacy is paramount, particularly with regulations like HIPAA, a federal law that mandates the protection of sensitive patient health information. My experience with ETL pipelines and cloud integration has enabled me to develop scalable infrastructure that ensures data privacy and security, allowing healthcare providers to leverage analytics without compromising compliance.

System integration is another major hurdle, as healthcare organizations often use disparate systems that do not communicate effectively. For example, platforms like Traumasoft for EMS operations, Paylocity for payroll, and Kallidus for training management are each specialized but operate independently, creating significant challenges in data sharing and workflow consistency. By leveraging tools like Azure Data Factory and Power BI, I successfully integrated data from these multiple sources into cohesive, unified systems that provide real-time visibility. Breaking down data silos empowers stakeholders with actionable insights, leading to more informed and timely decision-making.

For instance, integrating data from Traumasoft, Paylocity, and Kallidus allowed leadership to have a unified view of workforce performance, training needs, and operational efficiency. This cohesive data integration helped in aligning workforce capacity with operational demand, thereby optimizing resource allocation and improving service delivery.

Effective Implementation Planning

Implementation planning is crucial for the smooth adoption of new technologies. Throughout my experience, I have worked closely with stakeholders to understand their pain points and align technical solutions with business objectives. This collaborative approach ensures that solutions are tailored to meet the specific needs of healthcare providers, ultimately leading to higher user adoption and measurable improvements in operational efficiency.

For example, when rolling out the new incident management system, I conducted workshops with frontline staff and supervisors to understand their workflows and pain points.
